Catch up: All the spaces

and some great trivia content

Catch up with Kirsty Kapp

Confidante, Kirsty Kapp, and I catch up on the first four episodes of the series.

In this conversation, I am thankful I can explain a bit of quantum physics, while Kirsty is excited about recognising Traditional Knowledge and horrified at the lack of women in arts leadership in Australia’s recent past.

We argue about whether an octopus has eight arms or eight legs and celebrate science's role in making trivia great again.

Note, I made some factual errors in the show:

  • The technology stack has six layers, the seventh being Country (from Mik Jade's story)
  • The Story of the Ned Kelly Gang, the world's first feature-length film, opened in 1906, not 1907 (December, though, so I'm close).

"This is the first time we're doing this, so the tech's not quite there. We'll see what happens."

Our regular catch up episodes are really designed for those who don't have time to listen to each episode or want to be selective about which topics to listen to.

In the next 30 minutes, I'll take Kirsty through the incredible stories I've explored and people I've met in our previous episodes. These are a chance for you to see which topics captivate you, so you can head straight there or mark them on your to listen list.

They came from my own habits when choosing podcast episodes. I will rarely listen to a series from beginning to end, rather, I'll skim the list of topics and choose one that interests me in that moment or fits my mood. With Australian Highlights, the topics are so broad and varied, that it just made sense to have an episode where we summarise a bunch of them. So I hope you enjoy this strange variation to usual.

Shout out to the podcasts Great Women Artists, You're Wrong About, British Scandal, the Verb, TED Radio Hour, Maintenance Phase, The Nerd and the Scientist, A Podcast of Unnecessary Detail, 7am, Noble Blood, If Books Could Kill, and so many more that I listen to in this erratic, bouncing around way.

"We've really gone from one space to the next, literally!"

In this "Flash" (a group of 4 to 5 sequential episodes of Australian Highlights) we go from the depths of outer space, to grounding ourselves on Country, to exploring our cinematic past.

 We discover:

  • Radio astronomy is a fantastic tool for mapping the Milky Way galaxy
  • Our galaxy got an additional arm thanks to researcher Naomi McClure-Griffiths.
  • Mik Jade is supporting Indigenous communities to use technologies like augmented reality and holograms to share their cultural knowledge in innovative ways, blending traditional and modern forms of expression.
  • The McDonagh sisters were pioneering filmmakers in the silent film era of the 1920s, with one sister becoming the first female director in Australia, yet their stories have largely been overlooked until recently.
